What are Backports?[편집]
Ubuntu releases a new version of its OS every 6 months. After a release, the version of all packages stays constant for the entire 6 months. For example, if Hoary ships with Firefox 1.0.1, Hoary will remain at Firefox 1.0.1 for the entire 6-month release cycle, even if 1.0.2, 1.0.3, or 1.0.4 gets released during this time. The Ubuntu team may apply important security fixes to 1.0.1, but any new features or non-security bugfixes won't be made available to Hoary. 백포트란 무엇입니까?

This is where Ubuntu Backports comes in. The Backports team believes that the best update policy is a mix of Ubuntu's security-only policy AND providing new versions of some programs. Candidates for version updates are primarily desktop applications, such as your web browser, word processor, IRC client, IM client, and so on. These can be updated without replacing a chunk of the operating system that would affect stability of the whole system.
이때 필요한 것이 우분투 백포트(Backport)입니다. 백포트 팀에서는 우분투 팀에서 지원하는 보안만 지원하는 정책과 업데이트 된 프로그램을 바로바로 지원하는 정책의 중간을 취하고자 합니다. 버전 업그레이드의 대상은 웹 브라우저, 워드 프로세서, IRC 클라이언트, 메신저 클라이언트 등의 데스크탑 어플리케이션을 위주로 잡고 있습니다. 데스크탑 어플리케이션들을 업그레이드하더라도 시스템 전체의 안정성에 위협을 줄 정도의 변화는 아니기 때문입니다.
What are Extras?[편집]
Ubuntu already provides you with an enormous collection of packages that you may install using the Synaptic manager or the "apt-get" command. However, some programs are still not available via this system. The Extras repository holds these kinds of packages that aren't found in Ubuntu's package collection. Most of these packages will eventually make their way into the Ubuntu package repositories, but for one reason or another (mostly immaturity) aren't ready at the moment. 엑스트라 저장소(Extras Repository)는 무엇입니까?

Extras are snapshots of these packages stabilized to an acceptable degree for general use. Again, these packages may not be of Ubuntu quality, but are better than most hand-made varieties.
일반적인 용도로는 사용할 수 있을 정도로 안정화된 패키지들 입니다. 물론, 다른 우분투 패키지 만큼의 안정화 작업을 거치지는 않았습니다만, 그래도 수동으로 만든 패키지들 보다는 낫습니다.
Didn't Extras Once Hold Media Plugins?[편집]
Yes, they did. However, this author and the master mirror are both hosted in the USA, where some of these packages are illegal. For our own legal safety, we've discontinued offering restricted plugins. However, there are other efforts underway, and we recommend using these instead. One notable effort is the PLF, at http://wiki.ubuntu-fr.org/doc/plf

Are Backports/Extras Safe to Install?[편집]
Yes. Each package goes through a tremendous amount of testing in a beta-testing region (-staging) before it's included in the stable branch that you'll be using.

As of June 2005, we are an official Ubuntu project, so we are acknowledged by the developers. Therefore, the developers won't have issues with Backports users . 백포트 프로젝트는 우분투팀이 지원하고 있습니까?

Can I ask for packages to be backported?[편집]
Of course. Start a thread. There are, however, some guidelines the Backports team abide by to preserve stability. Mainly: Only packages currently in Ubuntu's development branches are eligible for backporting Backports of large, interdepending applications stacks are bad! New versions can be backported, when they're compatible with already OS and System relevant libraries. No new libraries, which will "break" or better say, affecting other applications (e.g. libvorbis, libz etc.) unless the update fixes an exploit (Brandon Hale suggests leaving these for the security team). No changes to language interpreters (python, mono). These could affect existing packages in unexpected ways. Applications to be backported must have meaningful bug/security fixes or features.
